Apollo Sunguard’s Shade Solutions Withstand Hurricane Force Winds
While the aftermath of Hurricane Ian was devastating in 2022 for Florida’s southwest coast, Apollo Sunguard’s shade solutions withstood the Category 4 hurricane.

On the morning of September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall in Cayo Casta, Florida, a barrier island west of Fort Myers on Florida’s west coast. A Category 4 storm, Hurricane Ian brought with it 150 mph sustained winds and 10 to 15 feet of storm surge – making it one of the strongest hurricanes to make landfall in the Sunshine State. Despite the pounding winds and demanding force from the surge, in the aftermath, Apollo Sunguard’s shade sail poles remained at Bayside Park pointing skyward.
Apollo Sunguard shades’ construction, patented quick release system and industry leading warranty make them ideal shade solutions for hurricane prone areas like the southeastern United States.
The Durability of Our Shade Solutions are Constructed to Withstand Storms
Apollo Sunguard’s state-of-the-art shade solutions are constructed to withstand storms and hurricanes and are made with durable products designed to last.
With the sun shade sail canopy in place, Apollo Sunguard’s shade structures have proven to withstand sustained winds up to 115 mph. Its shade sail poles without the shade cloth, however, can withstand sustained winds up to 180 mph.
This is because Apollo Sungard engineers its shade structures to withstand wind loads in accordance with the American Society of Civil Engineers, International Building Codes, and applicable city, county and state codes. The steel framework of its shade sail poles is manufactured to exact specifications. Cold-rolled, galvanized tubular steel is used with a triple layer of protection to create more tensile strength and longer-term corrosion resistance than most steels offer.
Apollo Sunguard’s fabricators use a special galvanized welding wire and triple-treat each weld with zinc coating for extreme corrosion protection on its shade sail poles. Concerned about salt water? For marine and aquatic environment installations, Apollo Sunguard offers hot dip galvanization that adds one more layer of protection against saltwater spray and weathering.
Equal attention is placed on the fabric that Apollo Sunguard uses to construct its shade cloth. Apollo Sunguard uses high-density polyethylene materials that contain ultraviolet additives and are breathable, mildew resistant and mold resistant. We cut each panel to precise measurements and then sew and reinforce the material using advanced, non-aging stitching thread designed to stand up against the sun’s hard effects.
This attention to detail results in a strong system that can withstand Mother Nature’s fierce winds and storm surges.
Our Shade Solutions Make Storm Preparations Easy
Apollo Sunguard’s state-of-the-art Quick Release System™ is the simplest release system in the shade industry, and with just a wrench, our shade solutions can be adjusted for incoming storms.
We recommend always removing the shade cloth when winds are predicted to exceed Category 1 hurricane speed of 74-95 mph. Just as we’ve paid close attention to the construction details of our shade sails and shade sail poles to ensure high quality performance, we have also paid attention to the ease of which the shade cloth, no matter what size, can be removed from the poles in the event of an incoming hurricane or storm. Your operations and facility mangers will appreciate how easy our sun shade canopy cloth can be removed from the poles, as no special tools are needed.
Our Quick Release System™ is constructed using maintenance-free, stainless steel and galvanized hardware. There is no internal tensioning mechanism that can jam. In fact, the cables are hidden inside reinforced hems within the fabric, making for an easy removal and clean look. We also have designed simple and accessible replacement parts, should they be needed.
We understand how important it is to prepare for weather events, and to do so quickly is paramount. This is why we made sure removing our shade cloth from our shade sail poles is fast and easy for you as you get your property ready for a storm.
